Gas Line Fire in Gulf of Mexico
Dramatic images surfacing the web as what some people describe as the eye of fire or a portal to hell. The shocking images of the Gulf Ocean on fire look like something out of a sci-fi movie but I can assure you this is the real life. Pemex, Mexico’s state-owned oil company has put out a statement Friday stating it suffered a rupture in an undersea gas pipeline in the Gulf of Mexico, causing this terrifying scene in the middle of the ocean. While it took five hours to contain the fire no one was injured, but the environmental damages are still unknown.
Miyoko Sakashita, oceans program director for the Center for Biological Diversity has quoted “the frightening footage of the Gulf of Mexico is showing the world that offshore drilling is dirty and dangerous as this is not the first time a leak in an underwater pipeline has surfaced and it will not be the last.” As long as the demand for oil and gas remain high we will continue to put our environment in danger. Alternative energy resources such as wind turbines, solar panels and electric cars are great tools that are needed to be invest into our society if we want to see a change. We understand certain things like transportation is a key factor to life but we also need to understand how our ICE (internal combustion engine) vehicles are damaging our air quality. We have to make better decisions on how we get around.
With bike and E-Scooter companies such as Citibike, Revel, Lime and Bird on the verge of expansion, there are multiple ways of getting from your destination. This source of alternate transportation is sufficient for certain crowds but what about the parent that has to bring their kids to school or the elderly that has to make it to their doctors appointment? I can’t see my 67-year-old dad jumping on an E-Scooter to make it to his eye doctors appointment.
A new innovative electric ride-share / car-share developing in NYC called AER (Alternative Energy Resource) has developed a system that will not only decrease carbon emissions, decrease major traffic and parking issues in major cities but it will also create a safe and clean way for you to get to and from your destination. The tools are already available for us to make the right decision to better our environment; we just need to break out of our old habits and get used to a new carbon neutral system.
